The increased concern about environment protection, requirements in storage of food, medical, chemicals etc. haveled to widespread research in humidity sensors. A humidity sensor or hygrometer is an instrument to measure the moisture content in ambience. Some modern hygrometers exploit changes in inherent properties such as resistance or capacitance of the sensing materials upon exposure to humidity. The sensing materials are not only limited to ceramics, lithium chloride, porous siliconbut many materials including polymers have been emerged out as potential candidates for humidity sensors. In this context, humidity sensors based on polymers, especially conjugated polymers (e.g. polyaniline, polypyrrole, polyacetylene) are of considerable importance due to their mechanical flexibility, low temperature processing and large-area disposable applications.
Polyaniline (PANI) is a conjugated polymer, which have been extensively used so far for various applications including humidity sensors. In this work, we explore the possibility of PANI, which has been dopedwith an organic dopant, sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) for the first time, to be used as humidity sensor. The compatibility of PANI-SSA as a moisture sensitive material has been confirmed by evaluatingits hygroscopic nature. In comparison with the existing HCl–doped PANI - based humidity sensors, PANI-SSA based humidity sensors showed higher moisture sensitivity and reasonable linearity that would be a positive signature towards efficient humidity sensors. With an increase in humidity (from 20% RH to 90% RH), the spin-coated films exhibitobservable decrease in resistance. Adsorption of water molecules on the surface, leading to a decrease in activation energy has been found to be a possible reason for increase in conductivity upon exposure to moisture. In order to understand the physical phenomena behind moisture sensing property, various characterizations such as thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been performed.
